Geology A program within the Physical Sciences Department |
Things to doGLG 230 is a field course designed for everyone who wants to understand the geology of the southwestern Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona and southern Utah. Whether you're a geology major, a K-12 teacher, or simply someone interested in the history told by the spectacular landscapes of central and northern Arizona, you'll have the opportunity to collect rocks and fossils (where permitted), interpret the ancient environments, take photos and video footage of classic geological features, and use geologic intruments to gather data and relate it to geologic maps. On most days, we will also have to opportunity to explore the geology on foot via a hike. Generally, the hikes will have easy, moderate, and difficult options to cater to the varying abilities/tastes of the students. Click here for Official Course Competencies. There are no prerequisites for this course. We will be camping each night in an improved campground- i.e. toilets and water will be available. The course fee will include campsite and entrance fees, most lunches and one breakfast for the days in which we will be away from civilization. Other meals will be at the expense of the students in a town or commercial area near the campsite.Course Information:Dr. Gary Calderone, Instructor, gary.calderone@gccaz.edu Pre-Trip Meeting: Wednesday, May 13, 7:00 - 8:30pm, PS 174 Field Excursion: Monday, May 18 @ 7:00 am to Friday, May 22 ~ 6:00 pm Continuing students may register according to their registration permit info beginning March 30.
