GLG230AB, Section 11736, 2 Credits: Field Geology of the Southwest.

Summer 2012

Geology of Death Valley, Long Valley and Yosemite, aka:

"FIRE and ICE"

This class includes two evening meetings (July 17 in PS-176 and August 14 in PS-176, both at 7:00pm) plus an eight-day field expedition from July 24, 2012 to July 31, 2012, to observe outstanding desert volcanic and glacial landforms in east-central California. The spectacular and rare vistas of Death Valley, Owens Valley, Long Valley, and the edge of Yosemite will be explored with an eye towards the unique and breathtaking geology and violent volcanic and subsequent weathering processes that have shaped this unique and stunning landscape. The class will also visit locations NASA uses for its Mars rover simulations like "Ventifact Hill" and Mono Lake. Ample opportunities for sample collection (where permitted) and photography will exist so that K-12 teachers and teachers-in-training can obtain some excellent teaching supplies. Temperatures will range from approximately 5-10 degrees warmer than Phoenix (in Death Valley) to possibly below freezing (at the highest elevations in/near Yosemite). Elevations will range from -282 to over 11,000 feet. A lab fee of approximately $150.00 will pay for all travel and camping in developed campgrounds in scenic localities along the route, as well as for some lunches in the field. The $150.00 lab fee is non-refundable after July 18, 2012. Interested students should contact the instructor, Steve Kadel at e-mail: s.kadel@gccaz.edu
