GLG230AB, Section 16094: Field Geology of the Southwest. Pre-Summer 2010

Geology of NEW MEXICO and EASTERN ARIZONA

This version of GLG 230 is a field course designed for everyone who wants to understand the geology of New Mexico and northern Arizona. Whether you're a geology major, a K-12 teacher, or simply someone interested in the history told by the spectacular landscapes of New Mexico and Eastern Arizona, you will appreciate everything offered by this trip. We will observe geological phenomena, explore field relationships of rock units, and collect teaching samples, where permissible. Designed for pre- and in-service teachers, but open to any and all interested individuals! Click here for Official Course Competencies.

There are no prerequisites for this course.

We will be camping each night in an improved campground- i.e. toilets and water will be available. The course fee will include campsite and unwaivable entrance fees and most lunches in the field. Other meals will be at the expense of the students in a town or commercial area near the campsites.

Course Information:

The field locations have been chosen to allow participants to observe outstanding volcanic, fluvial, aeolian, and cave landforms in eastern Arizona and New Mexico. The spectacular and rare vistas of San Francisco Peaks, Petrified Forest, Hopi Buttes, Canyon de Chelly, Shiprock, Valles Caldera, Zuni-Bandera, White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns, Kilbourne Hole, Chiricahua Mountains, and San Carlos lava field will be explored with an eye towards the unique and breathtaking geology and violent volcanic and subsequent weathering processes that have shaped these unique and stunning landscapes. Ample opportunities for sample collection (where permitted) and photography will exist so that K-12 teachers and teachers-in-training can obtain some excellent (and otherwise difficult to obtain) teaching supplies. Temperatures will range from approximately 5 degrees cooler than Phoenix (southern NM and AZ) to possibly below freezing (at the highest elevations near Canyon de Chelly and Valles Caldera). Elevations will range from 1100 feet to over 8,000 feet. Lab fee of $150.00 will pay for all travel and camping in developed campgrounds in scenic localities along the route, as well as for some lunches in the field. The $150.00 lab fee is non-refundable after May 19, 2010. Interested students should contact the instructor:
