An Introduction to Geologic Maps

by Gary J. Calderone (Glendale Community College), Michelle Hall-Wallace, and Robert F. Butler (University of Arizona)

This exercise is designed to help introductory geology students master the basic concepts of interpreting geologic maps. The tutorial begins with background information on basic geologic concepts and builds on these as it goes. The program uses cartoons, clay models, and actual photos of geologic structures and maps. Central to the tutorial is a ficticeous geologic map of an equal ficticeous location called Bumluck, Utah. This map illustrates nearly all the basic concepts that introductory geology students are expected to master and serves as the basis for numerous exercises.
