Fluency with Instructional Technology (FIT) focuses on what an English instructor must know and understand about information technology in order to use it effectively and productively to enhance teaching and learning.  As the integration of instructional technology into the classroom has become more important, resources for educating and assisting faculty in this new arena have become crucial. Workshops on how to use software are not enough. Teachers need to understand how these new tools can make a significant difference in how their students learn.

In addition to offering instructors step-by-step instructions for using software, this website also offers suggestions for how instructors might initiate and guide particular technology-supported learning activities, presents the different roles technology might play in a classroom, and promotes thinking and reflection about the best uses of technology in the classroom.

Three essential components of being Fluent with Instructional Technology are:

  • Classroom integration -- the ability to apply information technology in instructional situations and to understand the outcomes of doing so.
  • Conceptual knowledge -- an understanding of the fundamental concepts of computing and learning.
  • Computing skills -- the ability to use the available software and hardware effectively.
