Update Symantec AntiVirus definitions on a weekly basis.
Symantec AntiVirus software is a valuable tool but only if kept updated and used on a regular basis to scan your computer's files and email attachments. The easiest way to do this is to enable scheduled LiveUpdate. Open Symantec AntiVirus, and on the File menu, click Schedule Updates. In the Schedule Virus Definition Updates dialog box, check Enable scheduled automatic updates. You may specify the frequency, day, and time that you want LiveUpdate to run.  Click OK.

Request students submit email-attached assignments saved as rich text format (.rtf) documents instead of saving in their word processor's default format.
Rich text format (.rtf) documents do not carry viruses that attach themselves and spread through Word's .doc format.  Here are directions to save a word processed file as rich text format. Another advantage to requiring students to save files in rich text format is the ability of nearly any word processing program to open .rtf files.  Rich text format files can be opened (without converters installed) by any version of Word, Works, Star Office, WordPerfect and other word processing programs.

Request students use Blackboard's Assignment Manager to submit assignments.
Blackboard's built-in safety features will not accept files with viruses attached to them.

Manually scan email attachments before opening.
If you must open an email attachment in a format other than .rtf, then first save the file to your desktop and initiate a manual virus scan.  To do this, right-click on the file and then click Scan For Viruses.  If Symantec AntiVirus finds the file free of viruses, then it is safe to open.
