Baccharis sarothroides-Desert Broom

3-9' tall rapid grower. Rounded evergreen with branches resembling broom straw. There are male and female plants and females have dense fluff which can cause many unwanted seedlings. Tolerant of sun and heat.  Description for species is the same as for the cutting grown male selection. Very drought tolerant and hardy to 10F.

Cut back to ground periodically to regenerate new growth.  It can be drought deciduous.  Native in the southwest along washes and bottomlands from sea level to 5500'.  It is soil tolerant even tolerating poorly drained and alkaline soil.  It is fast and can make a quick hedge.  It does attract butterflies in the fall.
