Unusual gymnosperm, related to junipers, that produces small cones from March to April. Reaches a mature size of about 3' tall and wide. Survives best in full sun, can handle drought, reflected heat, and cold down to 0f.  Fine landscape plant or making tea. Not hardy above 7000'.  Native at elevations 2-6000' from Nevada south into Arizona and Mexico.  Stems are pale green to gray.
