In light of the network overhaul, many things have changed. As we are in the process of getting things situated, we came up with this quick information page to get people started. Please note that this page will be replaced with a more comprehensive website!

For simplicity's sake, GCC faculty, staff, and students will be collectively known as "Users".

Go here: http://web.gccaz.edu/studenthelpdesk

What is web.gccaz.edu?

Returning Users will recall a server named "Gecko", which was found at gecko.gc.maricopa.edu . With the network overhaul, the Gecko server as we previously knew it no longer exists. However, the "Gecko" addresses themselves will still work, only as redirects as shown below:

http://gecko.gc.maricopa.edu/studenthelpdesk

will be the same as if you were going directly to my site really at:

http://web.gccaz.edu/studenthelpdesk

In "Gecko's" place, web.gccaz.edu came into existence. Here, we have a comparison of "Gecko" and web.gccaz.edu:

Item gecko.gc.maricopa.edu web.gccaz.edu
Serves individual web spaces for Users with Palette Accounts. Yes Yes
Allows Users to access their H: and S: drives (storage spaces on the servers). Yes No

What is the address of my individual web space?

It is of this format:

Please replace "palette_username" with your username. If you don't know it, please contact the Student HelpDesk at (623) 845-3555 x 2.

I'm a returning User. Where did the files from my account go? If I still have them, can I use them?

All of the files you had stored on the Gecko server have been transferred to your new [H:] Drive space. These files are conveniently located on the Desktop in a folder called OLD_FILES. You will need to move the items you would like to keep into the "My Documents" folder, also located on the Desktop. This applies to your public.www folder itself.

How do I re-publish my files to my web space?

For re-publishing your web space, you must cut-and-paste the files from one public.www folder to the other -- you cannot simply replace one public.www folder with the other! Please follow the exact instructions below.

IMPORTANT!!!

If you drag-and-drop files from H:\OLD_FILES\public.www (your old public.www folder), to H:\public.www (your new public.wwww folder), your files will not appear as intended!. You must copy/cut and paste documents!

  1. Go to H:\OLD_FILES\public.www and locate the files you wish to be visible in the new web space.
  2. Select the relevant files and "copy" [CTRL + C] or "cut" [CTRL + X] them.
  3. Go back to H:\public.www and then "paste" the files [CTRL + V]
  4. You should now see your files at http://web.gccaz.edu/~palette_username , replacing "palette_username" with your username.

I'm a new User. How do I publish files to my web space?

  1. On your H:\ drive, the personal space created for you on the palette, there should already be a folder called "public.www", without the quotation marks. If not, please create one.
  2. Create a new HTML document in your HTML editor or in the Notepad application available with Windows.
  3. Save your file periodically as you work on it! To save your file, select "Save As..." from the File Menu and do the following:
    • Select the "public.www" folder in the "Save in:" list to save your changes AND publish your site. Or, create a new folder that will store your HTML files as you work on them before you publish.
    • Name your file "index.html", without the quotation marks
    • Select HTML Document from the options in the "Save as Type" list. In Notepad, select "All Files" in the "Save as Type" list - if you don't do this, Notepad will save your document as a Text file (index.html.txt), which will result in your page to NOT be readable by web browsers.
    • Click "Save".
  4. To publish your web page, make sure the file is in the public.www folder you created earlier. If you saved your file to another folder, copy and paste the file into the public.www folder. Remember, anything in the public.www folder is viewable by anyone visiting your website's hyperlink.
  5. Also, if you were looking at public.www under H:, it'd be located at H:\public.www
