Prerequisite: Grade of "C" or better in College Algebra (MAT 150, MAT 151 or MAT 152) in the last two years or a satisfactory score on the placement exam.

Text: Trigonometry (9th  Edition), by Lial, Hornsby & Schneider, Pearson-Addison Wesley Publishers. There are several purchasing options, but you will need to have access to MyMathLab.

Description:  A study of measures of angles, properties of graphs of trig functions, fundamental identities, addition and half angle formulas, inverse trig functions, solutions of trig equations, complex numbers and properties of triangle solutions. A full list of competencies can be found at http://www.maricopa.edu/curriculum/M-Z/976mat182.html

Attendance:  You are expected to attend each class meeting on time.  Attendance will be checked each day. If, at any time, you wish to withdraw, see me and I’ll sign the form.  If you just disappear, you may receive a failing grade. Students with near perfect attendance (two or fewer absences) will be allowed to drop a quiz. Three tardies, walk-abouts or early departures count as an absence.

Quizzes:  There will be many quizzes throughout the semester. Most of them will be announced during the prior class, but some may be a surprise. Quizzes will be averaged to be worth one exam (100 pts).  There will be no make-up quizzes. This means that if you are not in class you miss the opportunity to earn these points. Some quizzes will be on MyMathLab.

Homework:  After a section is discussed in class you should work the recommended exercises. These will be available online in MyMathLab and need to be completed by the deadline. Students who have taken all the tests, and have an 80% or better on their MyMathLab homework may opt to not take the final and have their MML homework replace it.

Testing: There are four scheduled exams worth 100 points each. There will be no make-up exams.  If you miss an exam, the final will replace it. The final exam will be cumulative and worth 100 points.  It will be given on Thursday, May 14, 2009 from 1:00 – 2:50 p.m. in this classroom.

Grading:       Quizzes   100 points       Scale:    A = 90% = 540-600 points

                     Tests      400 points                     B = 80% = 480-539 points

                      Final (or MML) 100 points        C = 70% = 420-479 points

                     Total            600 points              D = 60% = 360-419 points

Calculator: You will need a graphing calculator for this class. I will be using a TI-84 (I am also familiar with the TI-85, TI-86 or TI-89).  You may choose to use another type of graphing calculator, but you may have to figure it out on your own.  GCC's Math Department has a limited number of graphing calculators to rent.

Resources:  In addition to your textbook, your classmates and your instructor, GCC offers many different resources.  The Math Solution has free tutoring and a lending library. Course Compass (MyMathLab) is a robust learning tool.  Feel free to explore these to aid in your mathematical journey.

Additional Comments: Feel free to tape the lecture.  Turn off your cell phones and put them away daily. Only drinks in screw top bottles are allowed. No eating. Let me know if you have a disability or any concerns that may affect your work in this class.
