Attendance:

Attendance is required.  In accordance with GCC policy, you will be allowed two unexcused absences.  A reasonable explanation for missing class BEFORE the date of absence may constitute an excused absence.  After the third absence, you may be withdrawn by me from the class.  However, withdrawal is the responsibility of the student and failure to attend may result in a grade of "F."  You are responsible for signing the attendance sheet on the days that it is distributed.  I STRONGLY URGE YOU ATTEND EACH AND EVERY CLASS.

Tests:

Four tests covering textbook material and class discussion and activities will be administered throughout the semester.  Test dates are listed on the following agenda.  Scantrons and #2 pencils are required at test time.

Out of Class assignments:

Internet or computer lab assignments will be required as part of your coursework.  Worksheets will be distributed during class or on my web page:  web.gccaz.edu/~ejacobs.  Scores on late papers will be reduced by 50% for each day after the due date.

Getting to the Computer Network:

To use campus computer and login to your Palette Account on the GCC network, you will need your Palette/eGCC Username and Password. Retrieve your Palette/eGCC Username at the Library Commons Help Desk in Building “B.”

Grade:

The final grade for this course will be calculated based on the average percentage from course and lab assignments, quizzes covering textbook and class discussions, and attendance.  Averages are weighted as follows:

Chapter Tests: 65%, Out of Class Activities:  25%, Attendance:  10% = 100%.

A = 90%, B = 80%, C = 70%, D = 60%, F = <60%

No withdrawal will be initiated after the guaranteed "w" date.

Special Needs:

If, because of disability, you need special accommodations to take part in this class, please let me know.

Classroom Behavior:

It is assumed that students will complete assignments alone and that classroom behavior will contribute to the learning environment.  Please refer to the GCC Student Handbook for attendance, scholastic, and disciplinary standards.

Cell Phones/Tape Recorders/Visitors:

Unless you are expecting an emergency call, please turn off pagers and telephones during class.  Please do not “text,” listen to music, or talk on your cell phone during class.  It is rude and disruptive and students doing so will be asked to leave class which will result in an unexcused absence.  Students may record class proceedings but the instructor reserves the right to ask students to turn off their recorders at any time during class.  For insurance reasons, visitors and children should not attend class.

Agenda

The following agenda includes the chapters covered in this class and assigned for reading, test dates, and due dates.  READ the chapter from the text BEFORE the day it appears on the Agenda so that we can discuss the chapter topics during class time.  Clicking on the underlined links will take you to the PowerPoint Presentation that will be used during class.  Feel free to make a copy of the PPT handout to reduce your note-taking time in class.
