In 1969 Rod joined the U.S. Army Reserves, commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant, trained as a medic and later retired from the Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. Through the years, Rod has been very active in the Masonic fraternity becoming a Master Mason in Phoenicia Lodge #58, and a member of the Scottish Rite and El Zaribah Shrine. At the time of his death, Rod was serving as Treasurer of Phoenicia Lodge #58 and as a Senior Warden of the Valley of Phoenix Scottish Rite.

In 1987, Rod joined the faculty of Glendale Community College as an accounting instructor and held this position until the time of his death. Rod was extremely proud of Glendale Community College and that it provides its students an education that equals other colleges and universities. He never missed an opportunity to praise the benefits of an education at Glendale Community College.
