COURSE DESCRIPTION

Basic principles of fitness & nutrition for the prospective fitness professional. Topics include lifestyle assessment, nutrition, sports nutrition, fitness assessment, communication and motivating clients toward a healthy lifestyle and advanced principles of weight management for clients.

COURSE OBJECTIVES
After completing this class, the student will be able to apply basic principles of health,fitness, nutrition, sports nutrition, weight control and develop a safe and effective fitness & wellness program for healthy adults.

COURSE SOFTWARE
Blackboard:
Most of your assignments and readings will be accessed and completed in Blackboard, the course software for this class. It is imperative to follow the guidelines below to get your username/password and get comfortable with the software.

ACCESSING USERNAMES AND PASSWORDS FOR BLACKBOARD
You need a username /password for Blackboard entrance. Go to Blackboard home page at:
https://ecourses.maricopa.edu/webapps/login/. Click on the "New User Click Here" Icon. Select "Student Link". You are now at the SPAT tool (Student Personal Administration Tool). Click on " Look Up My Username by Clicking Here" link. Follow instructions to enter your information and obtain your Blackboard username/password.

BLACKBOARD GRADEBOOK
Grades can be checked and monitored via Blackboard. It is the students responsibility to check their gradebook and notify instructor if a grade is incorrect during office hours or via email.

STUDENT EMAIL : http://google.maricopa.edu
Effective August 10, 2009, a new email system is being implemented at all Maricopa Community Colleges, powered by Google (Gmail). This system will become the official way for students to receive communications from the students’ colleges and the Maricopa County Community College District.
Registered students can begin now to use their free email account, which uses the MEID plus the @maricopa.edu domain name – for example: JOSTB12345@maricopa.edu or SUS1234567@maricopa.edu.
Students will NOT be able to change their email address from the official @maricopa.edu format, either in Blackboard or in My Maricopa. Students must check their Gmail regularly, OR they will need to go to
http://google.maricopa.edu and forward their mail to their preferred email account. See attached handout.

REQUIRED ACTIVITIES

In/Out of Class Assignments/Case Histories: Assignments completed in class cannot be made up for points. Out of class can be made up if completed by due date. A 5 point penalty for each late day will be assessed for late assignments. Missed or resubmitted assignments will not be accepted 1 week past the due date regardless of situation!

Projects: Projects include client nutrition evalation/program development, internet resource evaluation and client nutrition teaching tool. See blackboard and notebook for guidelines.

Chapter Quizzes: Chapters quizzes listed on course outline under Chapter quizzes will be accessed and completed in Blackboard.

Reading Assignments: Readings from the Nutrition Action Healthletter and various sources will be accessed and completed in Blackboard.

Due Dates: A 5 point penalty for each late day will be assessed for any "required activity" (reading assignments, quizzes, projects or other assignments). Required Activities will not be accepted 1 week past the due date regardless of situation!

Exams: Completed in the classroom. Can be made up if missed only with Prior discussion with INSTRUCTOR.

Cell Phones/Pagers/Electronic Devices: Please turn off and remove from desk/chairs/tables all cell phones/pagers, head phones, MP3 players etc. during class time. Emergency modes are OK.
Tape Recording: Tape recorders may be used in class. Please advise instructor

Special Needs:If you have any disabilities which may hinder your learning the material presented in this class, please set up an appointment with special services and complete the appropriate forms as soon as possible. Syllabus Changes
:From time to time, changes may be made in the syllabus to accommodate class changes and enhance learning. Changes will be communicated to students via class announcements.

ATTENDANCE POLICY

No penalty for the first 1 unofficial absence. A tardy/early leave will be assigned after 5 minutes from class start time or any time before class ends. 2 tardies/early leaves equal 1 absence. You will be dropped from the course on the 2nd unofficial absence or 2 unofficial absences in a row. If you are absent, please check Blackboard for assignment or video postings. Attendance is required for this class!
