I
have been Professor of Biology and Microbiology at Glendale Community
College (GCC) for 18 years where I currently teach introductory biology
and microbiology. I received a Ph.D. in Cell and Organismal Biology from
the University of California, Santa Barbara. Prior to coming to GCC, I had
20 years of research experience working on chemical communication in fungi
and senescence in green algae. While at the University of Georgia and
Texas A&M University, I authored more than 35 peer-reviewed papers in
national and international research journals.
In
2000-2003, I was principal investigator and project director for Systemic
Reform In Science
(SyRIS), a $1.1 million dollar project funded by the National Science
Foundation and the Maricopa Community Colleges.
SyRIS
was designed to improve student outcomes in science across the Maricopa
Community Colleges through changes in curriculum and pedagogy. Over the
past three years, I have presented numerous seminars and workshops to
colleges, universities, and business organizations on active learning in
the science classroom, as well as on understanding and responding to
bioterrorism. I am author of two undergraduate textbooks: Alcamo’s Fundamentals of Microbiology (8th edition), Alcamo's Fundamentals of Microbiology (Body Systems Edition). To complement these texts are: Alcamo's Laboratory Fundamentals of Microbiology and Guide to Infectious Diseases by Body System. I also am editor of Encounters in Microbiology, Volumes 1 and 2. All are published by Jones and Bartlett Publishers: Boston. |
