Box Icon Using Media to Support Student Success

Many students will spend time outside of class exploring and learning if materials are offered in an engaging and flexible format. If you are assigning (or even suggesting) materials to students, make sure to view them first.

GCC's Library Media Center is building a collection of videos to support instruction. Most are available both on-site and off. (Provide your eGCC username and password to access these from off-site.) To listen to videos from workstations in labs, students will need earphones; generally, there is an audio connector cabled at the top of the keyboard. If you intend to use these in a classroom, check first to make sure the audio will play properly. Streaming media comes from servers elsewhere on the Internet, so access during prime time (mid-day) might be spotty.

The English Department has growing list of media resources on the Links for Writers web pages. Scroll to the bottom for the links. These include videos that different people have found that might be of interest to faculty and students. Some are professional productions, but others have been produced by faculty or students. Videos may be available through YouTube or TeacherTube, slideshows available through Flickr or Screencast, websites with media content, and podcasts. Many talented people are developing content in these formats, so keep an eye (and ear) out for announcements on any lists you read.

If you (or your students) are interested in creating your own audio and video materials, GCC has workshops and mentors who can help you. Some students have great skills in these areas. Media files can be placed on your own eGCC server space or on Gazaa, GCC's streaming media server. GCC's iTunesU should also appear this year.
