My Philosophy of Education
My philosophy of education is based upon the view that learning is a
developmental activity taking place in specific local contexts that are
social, cultural, and historical. This is a perspective shared by many
other educators who have been largely influenced by the original work
of Lev Vygotksy and by the contributions of those who followed in his
footsteps. I believe knowledge is not an objective commodity that can
be passed top-down from instructors to their students. Instead,
knowledge is incrementally constructed and reconstructed by diverse
individuals who bring to our classrooms distinct prior knowledge,
experiences, and backgrounds. Therefore, I view my role as that of an
expert facilitator in charge of structuring meaningful learning
environments that are conducive to active participation. I also view my
role expanding beyond facilitating individual development and into
supporting larger societal goals including diversity, democracy, and
economic prosperity.
