Reading and Writing in Online Discussions

Two Ways to Access the Online Discussion Area:
  1. Web Page Access
You can read and write in the Discussion area by clicking on the Online Discussion link at the top of every Syllaweb Workgroup web page: http://gecko.gc.maricopa.edu/~mdinchak/workgroup2002/index.htm (Add this page to your Favorites!)
You can access the Online Discussion directly at this location: https://mail.acad.gc.maricopa.edu/public/syllaweb   (Add this page to your Favorites!)

  2. Email Access
You can read (but not write) in the Online Discussion area in the same way you read  email in Outlook Express.  This is accomplished by adding a new server which will appear in the left column right under your usual email server.  Follow these directions to add the Online Discussion to your Outlook Express email:
  • Open Outlook Express.  Click on Tools and then on Accounts.
  • Click on the tab labeled Mail and then click Add.
  • Type your name in the Display Name box; click Next.
  • In the email address box, type your GCC Palette email address; click Next.
  • In the E-mail Server Names window, add this information:
    Select:  IMAP server
    Incoming mail server:  mail.acad.gc.maricopa.edu
Outgoing mail server:  type the same server name you use for your email account

(You might need to look this up by closing the current window and returning to the Mail accounts window. Highlight the name of  your email account and click on Properties. The Servers tab will display the name of your outgoing email server. Then, click on Mail and Add to begin again.)

  • When done, click Next.
  • At the Internet Mail Logon window, type your Palette username and password in the boxes.  Click Next. Click Finish.
  • Click Close to close the Internet Accounts window.

You should see mail.acad.gc.maricopa.edu listed in the left column under your email account name.

  • Click to highlight mail.acad.gc.maricopa.edu.  The Sychronization of Folders window appears on the right.
  • Click on the IMAP Folders button and then on Reset List to download all the available folders.
  • Scroll to the bottom of the list of folders, find the Syllaweb folder, and click on it.  Click OK.
  • The Syllaweb Online Discussion list is now added to your Outlook Express email. You may now read entries in the Online Discussion in the same way you access your email; however, to reply or post a new message, you need to access the Discussion through the website at https://mail.acad.gc.maricopa.edu/public/syllaweb
