WINDOWS EXPLORER (a.k.a. My Computer)

 

1.                  Right click on the Start button.

 

2.                  This menu pops up.  Click on Explore.

 

3.                  Windows Explorer opens.  Your screen may not be exactly the same.

Click the box with the minus sign to close up a folder.  Click the box with a plus sign to expand a folder.  Use the scroll bar (red arrow) to move up and down the folders pane.

 

 

4.   Click the boxes with minus signs, until all of the folders are closed up.  Then click the plus sign on the folder named My Computer.  Your view should be similiar to mine.

Left Arrow: FLASH DRIVE

 

If your flash drive is connected to your computer, it usually shows up as shown by the arrow. BUT, it could have the letter F: or the letter E: after it.  That may change depending on the particular computer system you are on.

 

You can click on the plus sign for the Flash Drive to see the folders and files on your flash drive.

 

Set Up Folder and Files for Viewing

 

1.  Windows Explorer is open.

2.   Select MyComputer in the Folders pane.

3.  Using the menu bar at the top of the screen, click on View.  In the pull-down menu, make sure the Status Bar entry is checked (if not, click it once.  You will then have to click on View again from the menu bar).  Next, in the pull-down menu, find the word Details.  Make sure there is a black dot to the left of the word.  If not, click the word Details. 

3.   Using the menu bar at the top of the screen, click on Tools; then Folder Options.

4.   The Folder Options window opens.  There are tabs at the top of the window.  Click on the View tab.

5.  Go to the Advanced Settings box, scroll down until you find this entry.

 

Click the check box for the line that reads:

 

      Hide extensions for known file types

 

Be sure the check mark is no longer visible.

 

6.   At the top of the Folder Options window is a button that reads:

Apply to All Folders.  Click this button.

 

7.   A confirmation window pops up.

Click the Yes button.

 

8.   Finally, click the OK button at the bottom of the Folder Options screen.

 

9.   Close Window Explorer.

 

PART TWO OF WINDOWS XP SETUP

 

  1. Right click on the start button.
  2. Click on Properties
  3. Click the Start Menu tab at the top of the window.
  4. Click the Start Menu radio button.
  5. Click the Customize button.
  6. Click the General tab at the top of the window.
  7. Click the Small Icons radio button.
  8. Set the Number of Programs on the Start Menu to 12,
  9. In the box labeled Show On Start Menu___
  10.   Be sure there are checkmarks in both the Email and Internet check boxes,
  11.   Be sure the text box to the right of Internet says:  Internet Explorer
  12.   Be sure the test box to the right of Email says:  Outlook Express.

 

 

  1.   Click the Advanced tab at the top of the Window.
  2.   In the scroll box in the middle of the screen, scroll down to find the item:  Scroll Programs.  Be sure this item is checked.

 

  1.   Click the OK button on the current window
  2.   Click the OK button on the remaining properties window.
  3.   You should now be back at your desktop.
