Workstation Image Management

Information on the Softricity SoftGrid Application Virtualisation System, and how we will be integrating it into the campus network can be found on these pages.

Remote Imaging

Update 09FEB2006: Ghostbooster has been retasked for this experiment, shifted to VLAN400 and has been upgraded with a 160GB HD, and will be testing the Ghost8.2 suite. Testing to begin next week.

Establishing a consistent, scalable and working method of workstation imaging across the campus.

            - Using the Ghost Suite we will be able to meet the following goals:

  • Create standard system images for new and existing workstations and servers.
  • Deploy new Windows and Mac OSX operating systems across the campus remotely.
  • Deploy new or updated applications and distribute updates.
  •     Ghost Factsheet

  • Unified/Scheduled Updates

One of the other aspects of image management has been a call for scheduled and centralised updates to workstations. Primarily Anti-Virus and OS patches would be the focus as application updates would be handled by SoftGrid and modifications to existing sequenced apps.

We currently have (or will have soon) access to Symantec Anti-Virus 10. Configuring the server appears to be quite straightforward and easily performed. I will be requesting to add a server running this to the test network this week.

    Updates as we go along.
