POS 221: Arizona Constitution

Instructor: Toni McClory

Attention current POS 221 students! Please go to Blackboard for course materials and grades.

About the Course

There are several good reasons to study Arizona government: First, this government has the primary responsibility for education, public safety, public health, the environment--i.e., issues that matter. Second, the course will make you a more informed voter. (Ever wonder about all those many ballot propositions?) Finally, learning about Arizona's distinctive government will deepen your understanding of politics in general. POS 221 fulfills the Arizona Constitution requirement for teacher certification. There are no prerequisites. See MCCCD's Official Course Description.

Arizona's Dueling Songs

Hannes Kvaran Rex Allen Jr.

We may be the only state with two official state songs. Listen to GCC Prof Hannes Kvaran perform the Arizona March Song, the state's original song. Then listen to Rex Allen Jr. performing his Arizona, which was adopted in 1987 as the "alternative" official song. (I wrote to Rex Allen Jr. in July requesting permission to share this with you. He immediately responded, "I would be honored if you use the song 'Arizona.' Use as much of it as you like.") Since he earns his living from his music, I'll only post a teaser. But you can visit his website for more information. So, which state song do you prefer?
