It is important to realize that our normal definition of a "rock" (the things we sometimes like to throw ) differs from the geologic concept of rock formations. The stones that we might pick up are usually bits that have been broken off or eroded from much larger rock formations. There are several names for these eroded bits including sediment, alluvium, detritus, clasts, or debris. Most dirt is just very finely pulverized rock.
