Some igneous rocks form layer-like or tabular bodies. These include lava flows which form map patterns similar to those of sedimentary rocks. Liquid basalt lava flows, for example, can form thin, roughly horizontal layers to which we can apply all our rules of layered rocks. They will form non-repeating stripes when tilted and repeating stripes or complex patterns when folded. Photo of Columbia Plateau basalts courtesy of USGS.
