By knowing the original shape, we can predict what the layers look like below the surface of the Earth! Consequently, we will begin study of geologic map interpretations with layered rocks. The simplest case is horizontal layers (as shown below). Horizontal layers of rock resemble layers of a cake in the subsurface. Remember, each major rock formation gets a different color on a geologic map.
