On geologic map explanations, surficial deposits are typically at the top to the stack of rock units (Qal) in the Bumluck explanation at left, because they are the youngest "rock units" (even though most of them are made up of sediments derived from older material). That is, these materials are called youngest because they formed from recent processes.
