In most cases, surficial deposits are not very thick. Thus on a geologic cross section, the surficial deposits form a thin veneer over the underlying bedrock. In the photo below, the tan rubbly mass wasting deposit overlies the lighter colored bedrock unit. Because surficial deposits are exactly that, they are usually not counted when evaluating the age relationships between bedrock in larger structures. [Image courtesy of the USGS]
