As you undoubtedly recall from your examination of relative dating methods, unconformities are surfaces representing a period of uplift and erosion between adjacent rock units. There are three types of unconformities (shown below). Because, there are no widely used map symbols for unconformities, we must learn to interpret them from analysis of the geologic map.
