There are times when we we may only see tilted strata and we may be uncertain as to which way is up or how to "straighten" them out.

Tilted Layers of Rock

 

In such cases, the rocks themselves may provide clues as to which way was up. Fossil footprints for example tell us that this surface is the top of the layer. If this layer is tilted it must be rotated so that the footprint is facing upwards.
