Not all lava erupts on the surface of the Earth. Some cools deep underground to form a class rocks called the intrusive or plutonic rocks. Intrusive rocks tell us that a body of magma formed deep within the Earth- perhaps 5 to 20 kilometers beneath the surface. Intrusive igneous rocks are given names according to their size and shape (or lack thereof).
