The Principle of Lateral Continuity can also be used in another way. The exposure of the Kaibab Limestone at Lees Ferry (left), for example, hints that the rest of the Grand Canyon Series of rocks (right) probably lie below those of Lees Ferry-- even though they aren't exposed at the surface. Geologists use these correlations to find oil, gas, water, and mineral deposits.
