- Elastic strain is important
in the study of earthquakes.
Rock, for example, can store elastic energy before finally
breaking (inelastic brittle strain). When the break occurs,
some of the stored strain energy is released as elastic waves
that travel through the earth-- shaking the ground as they pass.
