The final drafts must exhibit the following common characteristics:

Students must…

    • Write a well researched/documented, logical argument essay.
    • Either attack or defend a particular position on a debatable pro/con issue.
    • Provide a relevant title for their essays.
    • Ensure that final drafts are typed out in proper MLA format.

Essays must…

    • Be at least 700 words long.
    • Have an introductory paragraph, a strong thesis statement that reflects the author’s point-of-view, a refutation section, at least three body paragraphs, and a conclusion.
    • Integrate material from at least two credible outside sources. Integration strategies can include the following: quotations/statistics/examples/illustrations/summaries/paraphrases
    • Include in-text citations. They must also include a complete MLA style Works Cited page.

*Note: The Assessment Committee recommends that students do not attempt this assignment as an in-class activity. Instructors are encouraged to review rough drafts or conduct peer-review activities in order to ensure that their students perform well.
