Criteria for Common Assignment

  • Writing summaries is part of the ENG 101 competencies; instructors may want to determine if students have some prior knowledge.
  • Instructors should give the assignment mid to later in the semester.
  • Instructors should introduce writing summaries in class, and students should practice in class and outside of class on articles other than the one which will be used for assessment.
  • The final summaries should be written in class.
  • Students must cite the source in MLA format. They can use either or both an acknowledgment phrase or MLA citation at the end of the summary.

For Example:
-Acknowledgement phrase:
In the article “Cell Phone Use in the Developing World,” in International Business Times, Malcolm Ford writes…; or
           
-MLA citation:
Gross, Doug. "Kids Might Perform Better in School if Split by Gender.” BayState
