By examining fossils from different layers of rocks, early earth scientists concluded that life has changed through time. This concept is known as the Principle of Floral and Faunal Succession. We can recognize distinct assemblages of life forms that only lived together at one time on the planet. The fossils at left are from rocks equivalent to those near the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Those at right are from rocks equivalent to the middle layers of the Grand Canyon
