By examining fossil- bearing rocks from all over the world, paleontologists (geologists/biologists who study ancient life forms) have put together a relative geological time scale based on what life forms were present at what times. The periods of the geological time scale were named for the areas in which distinctive floral and/or faunal assemblages were found.
